Chimpansees South Africa

One of the most famous primatologists and conservationists is the recently deceased Jane Goodall. Her research into chimpanzee behavior is being continued by the 36 Jane Goodall Institutes worldwide. The Jane Goodall Institute Netherlands is one of them.

Together with the Jane Goodall Institute Netherlands, we are dedicating ourselves to Chimp Eden in South Africa; a sanctuary/reserve for chimpanzees. Chimpanzees do not occur naturally in South Africa, but unfortunately, South Africa is a major transit point for the illegal chimpanzee trade. These animals are often traumatized. Fortunately, the South African government is committed to combating the illegal trade in wild animals. Confiscated chimpanzees are brought to Chimp Eden, where they are reunited with their peers and can resume their natural behavior.

The 33 chimpanzees present are well cared for and receive healthy food. Every 18 months, each chimpanzee receives a medical check-up and, if necessary, medical care. Joao is the oldest chimpanzee and is already 80 years old. The youngest resident is Amari, aged 6.

Tourism was always an important source of income for the sanctuary. However, due to the Covid pandemic, tourism in South Africa has collapsed and is only slowly picking up again. Chimp Eden plays an important role in the care of chimpanzees and in education regarding animal behavior and the effects of illegal trade. Therefore, we have decided to help Chimp Eden generate income and encourage visits to Chimp Eden through the Jane Goodall Institute Netherlands.
