Golden lion tamarin Brazil (Completed project)

Through WWF, we connected with conservationists in Brazil who are working to save the golden lion tamarin. These beautiful animals were almost extinct. The only place in the world where these animals still live in the wild is in the rainforests near Rio de Janeiro on the Atlantic coast. Thanks to thorough research, a sound rescue plan, and revenue from ecotourism, the golden lion tamarin is no longer listed as "critically endangered" on the Red List of Threatened Species, but as "endangered." While that doesn't sound promising, it's already a major step forward in the conservation of this species.
Miranda, based in the Netherlands, conducted research on the effects of ecotourism on the conservation of the golden lion tamarin. This research showed that ecotourism has had a significant positive impact on the conservation of the species. Unfortunately, ecotourism doesn't appear to have a positive impact on the conservation of monkey species everywhere in the world. This is mainly due to the way tourists are brought into contact with monkeys.

Consider, for example:

  • the size of the tourist group,
  • how close tourists are allowed to come to monkeys (and thus transmit diseases). See also the Uganda page.
  • the number of other associated impacts, such as noise (music) and waste. See also the Borneo page.

Cross Nature has been in contact with conservationists in Brazil and has been able to exchange knowledge.
