Chimpansees South Africa

The story of chimpanzee Patricia
Patricia was found as a young, motherless ape by people with a big heart for animals. They brought her to one of the Jane Goodall Institute's chimpanzee sanctuaries. Jane Goodall was one of the most famous primatologists. Her research into chimpanzee behavior is continued by the 36 Jane Goodall Institutes worldwide, as is the protection of these intelligent animals.

Together with the Jane Goodall Institute Netherlands, we are committed to Chimp Eden in South Africa; one of the sanctuaries and reserves for chimpanzees. Chimpanzees do not occur naturally in South Africa, but unfortunately, South Africa is a major transit point for the illegal chimpanzee trade. These animals are often traumatized. Fortunately, the South African government is committed to combating the illegal trade in wild animals. Confiscated chimpanzees are brought to Chimp Eden, where they are reunited with their peers and can resume their natural behavior.

The 33 chimpanzees present are well cared for and receive healthy food. Every 18 months, every chimpanzee receives a medical check-up and, if necessary, medical care. Joao is the oldest chimpanzee and is already 80 years old. The youngest resident is Amari, aged 6.
Tourism has always been an important source of income for the sanctuary. However, due to the Covid pandemic, tourism in South Africa has collapsed and is only slowly picking up again.

You can help Patricia and her fellow chimpanzees by:
